The process to make background transparent for an image in Powerpoint is fairly easy and you can do it by simply following the steps I outline below.

Note – This method works well with images that have a solid background which is easily distinguishable from the foreground image.

Step 1: Open the powerpoint presentation you wish to edit the image in and navigate to the slide/image.

Step 2: Click on the image and a new tab will appear in your top ribbon called Picture Tools Format. Click on it

(Prot Tip: If you have multiple images which are getting selected or you are unable to select an image because some other image is on top of it then just right click the image on top and click on the send to back button. You will now be able to select your image)

Step 3: In Picture tools format, click on remove background.

Step 4: You will now be able to customize what you wish to keep in the image and what you wish to remove. You can either click on mark areas to keep and select what you wish to keep in the image or click on mark areas to remove and then select areas you wish to discard from the image. Now simply draw a line around what you wish to keep or remove.

Step 5: Click on keep changes if you are happy with the results. If now, simply discard and restart the whole process again as powerpoint keeps a backup of your original state.

(Pro Tip – If you wish to reuse that image somewhere else, just right click on the image and click on save as picture and save it wherever you see fit. You can reuse it later at different places)

If the image you wish to make background transparent has a solid single color background which you wish to remove then you can simply do that by –

  • Select the image and go to Picture Tools format.
  • Select color to display and then choose set transparent color.
  • Click on any area in the image which is of the color you wish to make transparent.

This is a hit or miss method which usually works on simple images that don’t have multiple overlapping colors. You can give it a try but I recommend you use the previous method.
